He feels he has been blessed in his work and is immensely happy that he can share his success with the community through his philanthropy. The life story of Floyd Jones epitomizes the spirit of the American Dream. He started life as the 11th child in a family of 12 children born to Missouri sharecroppers, seldom getting to school before Thanksgiving, picking cotton until the crop was in. His determination to get an education led him to join the Army after high school graduation, and after four years of service, with the help of the G.I. Bill, he earned his degree in Business Administration and Finance from the University of Washington. He was immediately hired by Dean Witter and Co. and became an enthusiastic and successful stockbroker. He and his wife, Delores, lived in Tacoma for 16 years where they both were active in the community. Two children, Laura and Steven, were born during this period and Floyd became an honorary Swede, active in his wife's extended family in Stanwood and Camano Island. After moving to Seattle, Floyd and Delores became involved in many cultural, civic, and political organizations. They were among the first supporters of KCTS Channel 9 and have continued their support over many years. They also initiated long-term support of the arts and sciences at the University of Washington where they endowed a chair in 1999 and, most recently, enabled the Drama Department to rehabilitate its theatre, now called The Jones Playhouse, just last year. After Delores triumphed over a difficult cancer experience, Floyd and Delores donated a generous gift to support the development of an innovative cancer center at Virginia Mason Hospital. The one-floor center was followed by the present gift from the Floyd and Delores Jones Foundation to Virginia Mason of a large new pavilion which will serve as a model for a 21st century approach to health care. In addition to these major philanthropic gifts, the Joneses have been generous contributors to numerous smaller groups over the years, for which they were recognized as "Philanthropists of the Year" by the Washington Chapter of Association of Fund Raising Professionals in 1997. Their support includes such organizations as The Union Gospel Mission and countless politicians locally and across the country. Floyd has also taken great pleasure in supporting artists and musicians and drama groups in Seattle and Camano Island over the years. But Floyd is a man of many interests and much enthusiasm, giving long-term generous support to many organizations which address justice issues and women's concerns, both locally and nationally. Not one to retire too soon, Floyd continues to work daily at First Washington Corporation, managing his own investments and his clients' accounts. Register today for this exceptional opportunity to hear this dynamic Northwest philanthropist speak on March 22nd at 12:00 p.m. at The Rainier Club, 820 4th Avenue, in downtown Seattle.
